4 tips for a Weekly Routine That Supports You During Pregnancy & Postpartum
As a new mom, life can feel unpredictable and overwhelming. While routines can bring balance, they don’t have to be rigid or overwhelming. The goal is to create simple, actionable steps that help you and your family feel supported.
As we head into the new year, here are four practical tips to help you build a weekly routine that works—no perfection required! Instead of trying to do everything, try focusing on one area to improve each week. Small wins add up over time!
1. Start with a Reset Day
Sunday is the perfect day to set the tone for your week, but if a different day works better, do what works for you! A simple 20–30 minutes spent prepping can make a huge difference.
Try this:
Review the week ahead: Write down any appointments, commitments, or goals.
Plan meals or snacks: Jot down a few easy meals or prep snacks for grab-and-go convenience.
Set one priority per day: Choose one task (laundry, grocery shopping, etc.) to focus on each day.
Why it works: Starting the week with a plan gives you clarity and confidence, even if things shift during the week.
2. Anchor Your Days with Mini Routines
Instead of planning every hour, focus on creating a few small routines that guide your day. These anchors can make your days feel more predictable without adding pressure. You don’t need an elaborate morning routine with 15 steps. I’ve tried that, and as a mom of little ones, it starts my day off feeling like a failure to be honest. START SMALL!
Try this:
Morning anchor: Begin with a quick prayer, stretch, and/or moment of gratitude before diving into the day.
Midday anchor: Pair lunchtime with something uplifting, like listening to a podcast or spending 10 minutes outside.
Evening anchor: Establish a wind-down routine, such as dimming lights, a baby’s bedtime ritual, stretching, or journaling before bed.
Why it works: These simple routines create a sense of rhythm and stability, even if the rest of the day feels chaotic. Your kids pick up on this too!
3. Batch Small Tasks for Efficiency
It’s easy to feel scattered when every little task pops up during the day. Grouping similar activities together can save time and energy.
Try this:
Assign tasks: Assign household chores to different people in the house or have specific times where you them. My husband does all our laundry. I do most of the cooking and kitchen work. My kids do a lot of the tidying at the end of the day (well, some days - haha!). Find a rhythm that works for your family.
Errands: Combine trips for groceries, pharmacy runs, and other errands into one outing.
Meal prep: Chop veggies for multiple recipes for the week or cook a double batch of a recipe to freeze extras for later.
Why it works: Batching minimizes decision fatigue and frees up time for the things that matter most.
4. Build in Breaks for Yourself
It’s easy to fill your week with things for everyone else, but you need space for yourself, too. A small break can help you recharge and feel more present with your family.
Try this:
Daily self-care: Spend 10 minutes doing something for yourself—reading, stretching, or enjoying a cup of tea.
Ask for help: Let a partner, friend, or family member take over for a bit so you can rest or take a shower. For me, my nightly bath is a given in our house!
Plan one fun thing for you: Schedule something to look forward to, like a short walk or watching your favorite show.
Why it works: Even small breaks can help you feel refreshed and better able to handle the day’s demands.
Routines aren’t about perfection—they’re about creating small, intentional steps that make your days easier and more enjoyable. Start with just one or two tips that will make the biggest impact for your family, and adjust or add on as you go. Get curious around if this new routine is creating more help or stress. You have permission to shift! Remember, the best routine is one that works for you and your family.
