Finding Peace in the Unknowns of Birth and Motherhood
Trusting God’s Plan
The trifecta of fall/winter holidays is upon us. I don’t know about you, but this time of year has me feeling equal amounts of joy and overwhelm. If you’re a mom, I know you feel the same way! As this year’s holiday season begins to creep closer, life feels busier than ever, with lists to check off, moments to cherish (you know the ones we “have” to create to give our kids the best childhood), and perhaps some anxious thoughts about the future—especially if you’re preparing to welcome a new life into the world. I remember last year, when I was preparing to have our 3rd baby, I was determined not to let the holidays be overshadowed by this huge change. I put so much energy into creating the best Christmas season ever for my older boys. This season can be full of that joy and anticipation that we so desperately want, yet it may also bring up feelings of uncertainty as you face the unknowns of birth and motherhood.
Before Thanksgiving last year, one of my nesting projects was to plan and organize 25 daily activities for our elves so my husband would be able to keep the Christmas joy flowing while I was busy with a newborn. I decorated early. I finished up all the presents and wrapping. But the thing is, no matter how much we prepare, life can take unexpected turns.
But, the great news is, in the midst of these unknowns, there is a peace that surpasses all understanding—a peace found in trusting God’s plan for you and your family. Let’s explore what it means to embrace that peace and find rest in the hands of the One who is guiding you and your family every step of the way, if you create the space for him to.
Embracing Uncertainty in Both Birth and Motherhood
It’s no secret that life rarely follows a script, and birth is no different. In motherhood, the need for control can lead us to stress over every detail and outcome, from the birth experience itself to how we envision our parenting journey. But true peace is found when we release our expectations to God.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
This verse can be an anchor through both birth and motherhood. God’s plans are good, even when they unfold differently than we imagined. Instead of getting caught in the “what ifs,” we can ask Him to help us lean into His presence, trusting that each moment is part of the path He’s prepared for us as mothers. Whether in the labor room, rocking a newborn at 3 a.m, or the chaos/struggles of holiday activities, no matter what season we are in, God is for us.
Finding Strength in Surrender
Surrendering isn’t about giving up; it’s about giving over. Giving over our fears, our “must-haves,” and even our worries about how things should look in birth and in motherhood. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prepare or advocate for what we want, but rather, we prepare with a spirit of openness and trust.
Imagine approaching birth, motherhood, and the upcoming holiday season with an open heart and quiet confidence, knowing that you are divinely supported. Whether it’s choosing comfort techniques for labor, deciding how to nourish your baby, or prioritizing the hundreds of opportunities presented to you, God is with you, guiding you through each choice and giving you strength as you grow into this new role as a mother. Lean into that.
Practicing Peace in Everyday Moments
Sure, embracing and surrendering sound nice, but HOW do I do that? Finding peace in the unknown isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a practice, especially during a busy season. Here are a few small practices to help you and your family reconnect with that peace daily:
Breathe and Pray: Take a few moments each day to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and pray. Let this be a time to release any worries on your heart, inviting God’s peace to fill you as you prepare for both birth and the journey of motherhood. Invite your kids to pray before they leave the house or before bed.
Meditate on Scripture: Choose a verse that reminds you of God’s faithfulness. Write it down where you’ll see it often—on the fridge, the bathroom mirror, or as your phone background. When you start to feel anxious or overwhelmed, let these words bring you back to a place of peace. Choose 1 each week/month/season and repeat it aloud for your kids to hear. You can even invite them to say it aloud with you!
Embrace Gratitude: Reflect on the blessings surrounding you, from the love of family to the little kicks you feel inside. And as you enter motherhood, gratitude can keep you grounded in moments of exhaustion, helping you see beauty in the small, tender details of this season. We love going around the table at dinner and saying something we are grateful for that day.
Trusting God’s Plan for Birth, Motherhood, and Beyond
In the end, birth and motherhood may not go exactly as you imagine—and that’s okay. God’s plan for you and your babies is one of love and care, even if it looks different than expected. In every high and low, every moment of stillness or unpredictability, He’s there. Embracing His plan doesn’t mean everything will be easy, but it means you don’t have to face it alone.
As you enter this holiday season, may you rest in His love, knowing that no matter what unfolds, you are held by a peace that only He can give. Here’s to trusting the journey, step by step, and celebrating the beautiful mystery of both birth and motherhood.
